I work for Gannett, the nation's largest newspaper company that owns 85 papers including the USA Today, Arizona Republic and the Detroit Free Press. I really love working there, but like just about every newspaper company, we're getting hit hard economically. Gannett's stock right now is less than $4 a share, when it was around $30 a year ago. To deal with it, Gannett's corporate office issued a mandatory one week furlough for all 31,000 of its employees, even the custodians and deliverymen. A furlough is a week of unpaid absense. Basically its treated like an entire week of not having a job, so we're not allowed to check work email and voicemails, or even have employees call us. One week of unpaid leave isn't that big of a deal, but it could become a problem for many employees if they keep implementing these unpaid furloughs throughout the year. So far that hasn't happened. But then again, it's much much better having a furlough than being laid off, so alhamdulillah I can't complain. I'll be taking my furlough during the first week of March and I'm looking forward to finally having some more time to play Guitar Hero :)
